Minnesota’s one constitutional amendment in 2016, to create an independent council to set lawmakers’ salaries, passed and is now adopted.
The amendment reads:
“Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to remove state lawmakers’ power to set their own salaries, and instead establish an independent, citizens-only council to prescribe salaries of lawmakers?”
- The commission will be made up of 16 members: 8 appointed by the governor, and 8 appointed by the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court
- Appointees would be split evenly between the two major parties (DFL and Republican)
- The council will review/amend salaries every 2 years
- Current salary of state lawmakers: $31,140 per year
